View from atop Mt. Hakusan, widely considered to be the most sacred mountain in Japan after Mt. Fuji, and featured prominently near the end of my novel Kanazawa.
From Chapter 19:
Over a peak, the sun’s rays colored the eastern horizon pinkish white. They softened as the clouds parted long enough for the sun to crest into view. Emmitt and his father-in-law watched the sun lift over a ridge directly opposite them. Its rays extended almost wing-like to the sides before lightening the entire sky. The other climbers on the mountaintop cheered, some bowing to the sun, others pouring sake over the stone marker behind them.
With the sun’s appearance, the higher mists began to burn away, leaving only those still deep in the valley.
